interesting development 
we have calculated the 5 years claim using the calculator provided by Semtech, and estimated the idle power consumption based on data sheet values.
We have now also measured the power consumption of a Fennec proto board, and it measured 4.4 uA.
You can find the code to achieve this power consumption on our Github page. (?)
All components are selected for low power consumption and the board has two power domains, allowing the software to switch off all non-essential peripherals when needed.
There are multiple factors that can influence the battery life, yes, the major one being the spreading factor or data rate.
An estimate of 5 years is based on the lowest data rate.
