SODAQ adds BLE to the SODAQ ONE

Hi everyone,

You know by know that at SODAQ we never sit still and keep innovating!

We have created a little shield for the SODAQ ONE that has the Microchip RN4871 BLE 4.2 module.
With this shield you can now add Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE 4.2) to your SODAQ ONE.
The BLE module we use is the same as on the ExpLoRer board.

The shield piggybacks onto the SODAQ ONE and leaves enough space to snuggly fit in a rechargeable 240mAh battery:

Besides the BLE module we also added a reset switch and battery and solar panel hook-up.
You can solder the battery and solar panel to the board directly, or use JST headers (which come bundled with the shield).

We also created headers for the free I/O pins.

And it all still fits in a matchbox!

The shield will cost € 19,95 but bundled with the SODAQ ONE you benefit from a temporary € 16,85 discount, so you almost get it for free!

Can the Bluetooth module act as a beacon? And do you have code for that (that prefereably works with the tracker)?

The use case is that i would like to enter my boat (where the sodaq is monitoring the batteries). And all phones would get a notification of the web page to visit where the battery status is mentioned.

Yes the RN4871 can definitely be used as a beacon module.
Please see the datasheet:

As you can see in the datasheet the module uses simple ASCII commands, so it shouldn’t be too hard to do what you want.

A library for both the shield and the ExpLoRer board is currently under development.
