My Heltec LoRa32 V3.1 does not work with my BME280 sensor

Hello,

I would like to operate a BME280 sensor on a Heltec LoRa32 V3.1. Unfortunately, I don’t know which pins I can use on the Heltec controller. I don’t want to use pins 17 and 18, which are only soldered on the back.

Thank you very much for your help.

Interested how you ended up on the TTN forum instead of the Heltec forum which seems to be the right place for this question…

Indeed, what ^^ he said, couple of tips on asking questions:

  1. If you are going to ask on the TTN forum funded by TTI, make sure there is something that explains how it’s related to LW on TTN/TTI
  2. Which pins 17 & 18? The ESP32-S3, the header pins (of which there are two lots of 17 & 18)
  3. Perhaps help out the volunteers with a link to the resources you looked at - helps them to help you and it indicates you did some prior research.

If you post on the forum, it will be a race to see if BNS or nmcc answers - guess who they are!

Thank you for your answers. I will now ask in the Heltec forum.

You can use P45 and P46. They are free to be used.

Thank you very much. I’ll try it out later.

& now we wait for the next post saying that the device won’t automatically flash anymore because they’re strapping pins for the ESP32-S3… but lots of info on this on the Heltec forum with this question answered multiple times there!

Some links would be nice. I haven’t found any answers to my question yet.

But maybe I’m not asking the right questions?

You haven’t answered the questions asked of you:

And there are many hits on Google for “Heltec V3 I2C BME280” with links to the Heltec forum, a GitHub repro, a YouTube video, the Meshtasic forum (x2) and the Arduino forum which has a link to a pretty reasonable blog that says how to do it.

Point 1 being the strongest here, I can see how you are likely to be using LW given this module but some confirmation would be good because, as above, this is a forum for TTN, not a forum for Heltec, we have to stay focused. Even if you are using TTN, then this question is somewhat marginal as it’s more of a Heltec V3 / ESP32 / how to read the data sheet & schematic type thing for a device.

And you haven’t posted on the Heltec forum as recommended where we are free to discuss all & everything related to Heltec products without needing the context of LoRaWAN on TTN/TTI.

Before I posted my question in this forum, I spent a long time (weeks) searching the internet to find a functional answer to my question. Unfortunately, I didn’t succeed.

Since I have been using the Heltec LoRa32 V2 for years and it works perfectly with the BME280, I wanted to buy a V2 again. Unfortunately, it is no longer available, so I have to deal with the V3 version.

In your last paragraph, you write that I did not post my question in the Heltec forum as you recommended.

Of course, I wanted to do that immediately, but it didn’t work because I was only activated late yesterday evening.

So I will implement your suggestion in the Heltec forum today. Thank you very much for your help.

We don’t know that - we just see what you posted - and most technical forums want context and links to the actual product & resources - leaving them out just makes it look like you are hoping for a quick win.

As we still don’t have any LoRaWAN context on here and given that @stevencellist, THE Heltec expert and myself (his minion) will pick this up on the Heltec forum, closing. I will post the solution here once it’s been unravelled.
