German cable operator Unitymedia said it will build a Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) in the city of Weilrod, Hesse. The network supports the use of applications for Internet of Things (IoT) in a connected city. The network is based on sensors powered with batteries that exchange small amounts of data. Few channels cover an area with a range of 5 to 12 km.
Unitymedia provides gateways that transfer data between end devices and network servers.
