Some organisations and deployment use cases mandate/demand/prefer IP based implementations…this is about expanding the addressable ('scuse the pun!) market for LoRaWAN
Of course making nodes part of the IP network doesn’t open them up to a whole new list of potential attacks. IP based IoT devices have such a good security records that we urgently need this additional attack surface added to our infrastructure.
Or am I being overly sarcastic?
So let them come up with an interface layer on what already exists - like a Packet Forwarder - where the IP address is virtual at the point of interface which then translates that in to pure LoRaWAN.
The tech industry, as per @kersing’s understated opinion, has an excellent track record in making things more complicated than they need be in the first place, leaving a sorry trail of engineering flaws in its wake, then you add in an “extended & embrace” philosophy and you end up with a good idea borked beyond belief as people try to shoe-horn in more functionality.
Why do they do that? Because of empire expansion? A recurring theme throughout history that we never really learn the lessons.
Imagine what SMTP/POP3 and FTP would look like now if there had been a funded industry body setup to oversee its development …
Great to see continued progress & momentum across the LoRaWAN ecosystem
Semtech to acquire Sierra Wireless in all cash deal at $31/share (approx 25% premium over Fridays close) for enterprise value of $1.2Bn. Strategic move that expands Semtech’s serviceable market and follows complimentary strategy of LoRa aligned with and complimenting cellular deployments. SW has strong and large competition (per Electronics Weekly: Sierra has a 3.3% share of the cellular module market but it is up against Quectel which has a 39.3% share, Sunsea which has a 13.4% share and Telit Cinterion with a 5.8% share) so not a home run and some risk to competing with potential customers (other module and system manufacturer’s)? I’ve watched Mohan make some shrewed buys over the last 10-20 years, some worked well (Cycleo (LoRa), Gennum (Datacom/Broadcast interfaces) and others) others less so over time. Suspect this one could be a good move (Just MHO)
Google kills off another product/service…not sure this will impact any TTN Community users but heads up none the less! Claim just 72 ‘customers’ so unlikely…still key message is be wary of using 3rd party cloudy services as a core component of your product solution/offering - if you can do it yourself or atleast use open standards and protocols and have a plan B ready (and a plan C?!) just in case you need to migrate!
Changes afoot to how we will hand leap seconds - or not! - No longer adjusting for variation between UTC and Earth’s rotation etc…should make life easier for Digital Systems that are core to the modern way of living…from 2035…
Of course all those digital systems can’t spare a couple of cycles to adjust the time. It’s better to let them slowly drift apart from the physical reality.
But it fits the current trends …
Semtech LoRa Edge expansion and collaboration for location based services and tracking - Amazon gets in on the act
Missed this a couple of weeks back….or at least missed fact offering “LoRa protocol” (sic) in S-Band. Suspect sloppy reporting and meant LoRaWAN protocol vs LoRa modulation, but you never know!
Echostar have been engaged with LoRaWAN for a while now
Semtech have formally launched the LR1121 MultiBand LoRa Transceiver
Key features - as a multiband device a single sku can potenially cover sub-Ghz ISM, 2,4Ghz global ISM and, for the 1st time Satellite S-Band (@2.1Ghz). Several SIP/module manufacturers have product launching or in pipeline for early production.
Product overview (in link to datasheet) here:-
Packaged in hardware/hobbyist-hacker friendly 32QFN
LoRa/Amazon Sidewalk expansion… sadly called as LoRa vs LoRaWAN.
how long before hackers get at them and make LoRaWAN/Dual use?!
Seems like Sidewalk is only available in the US for now, if you look at their availability map.
Also if you go to their developer portal - ’ SIDEWALK is currently in invitation only preview. If you would like to be invited to the preview, please fill out this form to apply’
If anyone interested in more on Sidewalk a discussion thread kicked off a few years back - not been updated for >12 months mind.
If anyone knows more or wants to add feel free!
After some ~5 years of discussion and specification evolution its sounds like LoRaWAN Relay final ‘here’ and in real world use in a commercial deployment/solution…
Moved LoRaWAN Relay discusion to seperate dedicated thread to preserve integrity of Library Threads as generally points of information, reference and interest with wider scope that may benefit TTN/LoRaWAN and associated technologies and information.
Probably not an issue for users of the TTN/TTS Sandbox, more of interest/concern for users of TTS at scale in private or hosted instances? Unless just using TTS Sandbox for development before moving to scale of course…
Another example of ‘cloud’ = someone elses computer and how their ‘vision’ may not match yours! Another ‘Integration’ path bites the dust…
Looks like CISCO announced they are exiting the LoRaWAN market. Despite the tone of the article we Forumites know how healthy the LoRaWAN ecosystem is and how many alternate GW and sensor offerings there are out there so existing C customers don’t need to panic and it’s an opportunity for us to give some help and guidance
