The gateway id is included in the device metadata so you don’t need a lookup function for the EUI.

What would happen if the clone and the original is put to work?

You can’t register a duplicate EUI on v3, so they’d share the same gateway registration, not sure if the gateway server would notice, but again, it’s not going to make any difference to fixing your issues.
