The Things Conference Smart Facilities & Compliance took place online on April 30, 2021. 1000 LoRaWAN professionals from all around the world gathered for a day of hands-on LoRaWAN workshops from #1 experts, 1-on-1 meetings with industry leaders and deep dives into the smart facilities & compliance vertical.
The conference is organized by The Things Network, a global open-source LoRaWAN network, and brought together leaders in the vertical such as Semtech, STMicroelectronics, The Things Industries, Safecility, ECBM, Tektelic, Akenza and Decentlab.
Here are the main highlights from the LoRaWAN Smart Facilities & Compliance industry:
Opening Session - using LoRaWAN in Smart Facilities & Compliance
Johan Stokking and Wienke Giezeman, respectively CTO and CEO of The Things Industries, demonstrated how to leverage LoRaWAN to more effectively manage facilities and create smart buildings by monitoring a wide range of parameters such as indoor air quality, energy, room occupancy and safety compliance.
They explored the benefits of LoRaWAN for smart facilities, the latest innovations in the industry, as well as successful use cases and their implementations.
Paving the way to smarter, greener buildings with STM32WL SoC
Benjamin Guilloud, STM32WL Product Line Manager at ST, presented the benefits of the world's first LoRa-enabled system-on-chip. Using real-world use cases, the talk showed how STM32WL can make buildings smarter and more energy efficient.

Overcoming the challenge of retrofitting fire and life safety compliance with LoRaWAN
More than 90% of the buildings we will live in by 2050 are already built. Cian O Flaherty, CEO of Safecility, addressed the topic of building retrofits. He explained how LoRaWAN can improve and automate inspection equipment upgrades, fire safety system testing, and emergency lighting testing for a large number of buildings. More than implementation, the talk discussed the challenges of making LoRaWAN effective and easy to adopt at scale.
Achieving ESG Compliance with LoRa
Byron BeMiller, Semtech's Vertical Marketing Director, explained how LoRaWAN can monitor and collect data on a variety of facility parameters and ensure that buildings meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.
