Our story

You are welcome to TTN Community Berlin

we started in May 5th, 2017 and we continue, providing Berlin with a crowdfunded, crowdsourced, crowdfinanced, crowdowned and crowdbased free IoT- LPWAN / LoRaWAN Datanetwork! Join us and support us right now, pls! Today, there are ~ 210 members. About 205 gateways are installed & registered now and up to 205 of them are active and public gateways, supporting one of the biggest communities in the LPWAN community world.

The community is driven by individuals, many of them from Universities and non-profit organizations. Companies or developers from companies are welcome, as well as users of other IoT-networks. The community itself is non-commercial. In our meetings everybody is invited to present new projects and solutions (commercial solutions welcome), to openly exchange hints and tricks and to share technical knowledge. Any presentations held or informations disclosed within the community are generally public. The community will not sign any NDA.

We are, with regard to the number of gateways, one of the leading TTN Cities. But this is -by far- not enough! We are in need of, at least, up to ~ 400 - 500 TTN gateways all over Berlin to provide an acceptable density and QoS. Nobody can exactly predict the numbers really needed for that because a gateway's coverage in real cities has few in common with it's theoretical coverage. Currently the strengh of our community network is not coverage but that TTN enables you to provide yourself with connectivity exactly where you need ist not depending on the deployment strategy of commercial providers.

Please be aware that we are not an alternative IoT-provider but a do it yourself one. Any gateway operator runs parts of the network for his own reasons. Many of us run gateways for learning IoT and LoRaWAN, for education purposes, for providing connectivity for own applications at locations where connectivity is needed, some of us also as a platform for developing in a commercial environment. We all share connectivity because we like the idea of TTN. No gateway operator will guarantee continuous service and as a community of serious hobbyists we try to support tinkerers and learners who ask us for help but we don't have paid staff to process service tickets. The primary sources of knowledge are the Learn and Forum sections of TTN's homepage.
